I’m very pleased to offer this astonishing circa-1905 3-bulb surface-mounted ceiling fixture by the incomparable E. F. Caldwell Company.
Established in 1895, Caldwell produced, hands down, the finest lighting in America. During the 1902 renovation of the White House, Caldwell supplied much of the lighting, including the three massive, iconic crystal chandeliers in the East Room. Much of this lighting remains in place today.
Commercial properties, such as the Radio City Music Hall and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, received Caldwell fixtures, as well as mansions across America.
This fixture, while not large, exhibits the classic Caldwell trademarks, such as the beauty of the design, and the incredible casting. The latter, in particular, defines all Caldwell fixtures.
The ceiling canopy of this fixture is an astonishing 9-inches wide. This is twice the normal width. It is dazzlingly molded in cast brass. Just wow.
The three bobeches are also dazzlingly molded in cast brass.
The fixture is only 13-1/2-inches wide, but has a large presence.
The fixture does not have the “C” Caldwell stamp but it’s included in the Caldwell catalog at the Smithsonian (see image #4). Many Caldwell fixtures are not stamped.
I’m uncertain as to the finish. It may be bronze doré.
I show the fixture with crystal beaded covers on the bulbs. The covers are included, and can be used over clear Edison-style LED bulbs.
(Above the ceiling canopy is a thick paper cut-out. This is shown in the images, and is also shown in the original catalog image. I’ve no idea why this is there! That it remains is incredible.)
The scale of the fixture is ideal for a foyer, hall, small bedroom, or dressing room. So, if you have a house built between 1900 and 1915, and if you’ve been looking for an OMG fixture for a small space, then this Caldwell might be perfect.
This fixture is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!
DETAILS: The fixture accepts standard base 60W bulbs (not included). The crystal bulb covers ARE included.
SIZE: See above. As well, the fixture hangs down 9-1/4-inches (not including bulbs).
I love writing this: there’s no damage.
The sockets are original (and in fine shape) with new wiring.
