Description

I’m very pleased to offer this high-quality 1960s Italian-made “Empress” chandelier by Lightolier!

We tend to think of the 1950s and 1960s as being all Atomic-age design, but most lighting during the era was traditional in design, as with the lovely chandelier.

The fixture is brass, with silver accents.

I particularly like the extended finials under each socket.

Originally, the fixture was bright polished brass and bright polished silver, all protected by a lacquer finish. Today, the brass and silver have developed a patina, even though much of the lacquer is intact. As I prefer this vintage look, I did not polish the metal.

ABOUT LIGHTOLIER
Beginning in the 1920s, and for many decades thereafter, the Lightolier Company (extant today) made some of the very finest fixtures. Their designs were always simply dazzling, and the quality was the very very very best. When you restore vintage lights such as I do, these aspects are so obvious they tend to jump out. It’s always a particular pleasure restoring a Lightolier!

When the fixture was made it would have been about twice the price of comparable fixtures by other lighting companies. This premium was for the quality, design, and the Lightolier name. Kinda like the difference between a Chevy and a Rolls-Royce. This premium still applies today.

With new wiring, this fixture is ready to hang, and comes with all the mounting hardware needed!

DETAILS: The fixture accepts standard base 60W bulbs (not included).
COLOR: See above.
SIZE: The fixture hangs down about 35-inches and is 23-inches wide. I can remove up to 14-inches of chain; I can add chain.
CONDITION:

  • I love writing this: there’s no damage.
  • The sockets are original (and in fine shape) with new wiring and paper insulators.
  • The candle covers are new.
  • As noted, I did not polish the brass and silver. Both have developed a patina, and there are subtle age spots to the brass.

SHIPPING: Insured shipping in the Continental US will be…FREE!
